A talent development program manager talks to us about DEI.
What is your name and what do you do in your company?
My name is Gayatri Dubey and I am the Program Manager, Talent & Development for Macmillan Publishers.
What does Diversity, Equity and Inclusion mean to you and why is this issue important to you?
To me, it means that everyone feels a sense of belonging and can be who they want to be without a fear of judgement or scrutiny. DEI is very important to me because I want everyone to feel safe - safe to be themselves, to express themselves, and safe no matter where they may be.
What has helped you to arrive and feel comfortable in your company?
I was looking to work with a team where I felt I could actually be part of that team and contribute in a meaningful way. Coming from many environments where people, especially other women, would tear each other down, it was an absolute breath of fresh air to join a company that encourages its employees and empowers you to be your best self professionally and as a person overall. My manager and department had a very welcoming approach that helped me to not only settle in but to realize I had found the right place to be – a place where one can express themselves and feel safe to do so.
Who/what empowers you?
My parents are my main source of empowerment. From a young age, they taught me to always stand up for what you believe in. If you see something is wrong, don’t go along with it because everyone else is, fight for a better way of doing things.
What does your company do to promote diversity?
Macmillan provides many opportunities for people here to express themselves and find other individuals who may also share similar thoughts and views. Macmillan also offers many ways people can learn more, feel included, and participate in events and training sessions without the fear of judgement.
