Being a multinational company, intercultural inclusion is of utmost importance at Springer Nature, where diversity drives a harmonious work atmosphere and a high level of performance.
What is your name and what do you do at Springer Nature?
I am Adiene Teixeira, the Director of Research Sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. My responsibility is to increase access to Springer Nature's high-quality and trustworthy content in the region.
What does DEI mean in the work environment and why is it so important?
As a neurodivegent Latin woman and parent, I have come to realize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in my life. While I have always recognized their significance, it was not until I became a mother that I began to reflect on the kind of world I wanted my daughter to live in. This led me to take a more proactive stance in promoting DEI and to begin making changes in myself.
I am leading a multicultural team, I understand the importance of being intentional about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our work should reflect the diversity of our society to ensure our company can survive in a volatile and competitive environment and attract and retain the best talent. A more diverse, equal, and inclusive work environment fosters creativity and innovation, which are essential for success in today's marketplace. As consumers become more diverse, we must also prioritize DEI to meet their needs and expectations.
What helped you to arrive at Holtzbrinck and feel comfortable?
Springer Nature hired me when my daughter was six months old, and I am grateful that they never doubted my ability to perform my job. This was just the beginning of my positive experiences at Springer Nature. I found a place where I could thrive, explore my talents, and be respected for my authentic self. This was rare five years ago, especially in Brazil. I deeply appreciate how genuine Springer Nature is in all its actions. We do not do things just to check a box; we genuinely care about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that is priceless.
How important is the support from colleagues and superiors?
I am fortunate to work in a healthy environment where I look forward to connecting with my colleagues every day. They are intelligent, and we have a strong sense of mutual respect and support. The sense of belonging that comes with being accepted for who you are is a game changer for any workplace.
What does your company do to promote diversity?
Springer Nature has a comprehensive DEI program that supports the creation and organization of employee networks, sets important DEI targets in senior management levels, and provides a strong DEI Learning Center to support the strategy. It's evident that DEI is a high priority for the company.
Creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive world matters. It matters not only for the present, but also for future generations. It's about evolving, learning from past mistakes, and creating a world where everyone feels a sense of belonging simply because they exist.
