China sales revenues doubled in just two years - Young Cui on her path at Springer

Young on her successful path at Springer Nature

How did you make the decision to come to Springer Nature?

I entered the Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) publishing industry in 2001 and joined Springer in 2009. Before that I worked for Blackwell Publishing and Oxford University Press and gained good experience and knowledge of the industry and the market. Therefore, when I heard that Springer was recruiting a sales director for China, I really appreciated the opportunity. Working at Springer, the leading STM publisher, I was able to offer services to help drive China's scientific development. In the meantime, I was also able to make good use of my connection to customers and create the company's value.

What was your path within Springer Nature?

At the start, I was  the China Sales Director, managing the sales for mainland China.  I did very well and doubled sales revenue in China in four years and in 2013 I was promoted to Vice President, Sales for Greater China market, adding Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. In 2015, I acquired the South Korean and Mongolian markets and then the Nature branded journal and Palgrave book business were added to my area of responsibility. While in 2009 I led a team of 5 people, I now lead six teams of 30 people. I really enjoy my work at Springer Nature because of the success in increasing business revenues and also for training and developing my team members and making my customers happy and satisfied. I work in the country with the fastest growth in scientific research and contribute one of the strongest growth rates to Springer Nature.

What are the big opportunities ahead for you and your team?

We have the opportunity to continue developing more institutional users to the Nature branded journals and promote the newly launched Nature journals to the customers in the region. In addition, we can maximize the ebook revenue by using the new ebook pricing models. Additionally we can make our analysis and reports available to  customers in their work perspectives, to show their sponsors of their value and differentiate our offering from competitors. Another point is to keep a close eye on the transformative deal arrangements in the region. Finally we want to integrate other services, such as AJE paper editing, Nature Masterclass and Dimensions into a comprehensive offering for stakeholders beyond the library.

What do you love about working at Springer?

I really like the company culture because of its clear communication about the company mission statement, which is to help researchers to learn, discover and achieve more. Moreover, the company’s strategy of clear structure and responsibility, including a clear KPI and awarding system, pleases me very well. Springer also really cares about its employees. I really like the team with many smart and collaborative colleagues. And finally, with its global version, cross-cultural communication and management, Springer creates the opportunity to see and feel the world on the job, which I really enjoy.

What advice do you have for job seekers looking to join as part of the group?

You should not miss the chance to join Springer Nature to stay update to the science, technology and society developments, connect with the smartest people in the world and take an interesting and challenging job under a warm and transparent environment.
