Maggie
Vice President - Central Marketing at Macmillan
"The atmosphere at Macmillan is very collaborative and values creativity and innovation."
I was attracted to the opportunity to bring a new and strategic vision to the Central Marketing department. I've worked in the communications and marketing space for several years, focusing on global clients across financial services, and consumer brands, and was excited by the chance to apply my skills to the publishing industry. I was drawn to the people and culture, which played a major role in my decision to join Macmillan.
One of the foundational projects my team executed was to refresh the brand framework for Macmillan Publishers, which intends to clarify who we are, what we do, and how we work rather than shifting that view. The core of our 'why' has not changed — we are just defining it with a bit more consistency and modernizing our style. It was an important step to lay the groundwork that would inform how my team would go to market across all marketing communications channels and develop meaningful campaigns to reach broader audiences — which continues to evolve as consumer behavior changes.
We have a lot of exciting plans and projects on our roadmap. In general, we are seeing a significant shift in consumer preferences (and attention), and businesses must adapt to meet their needs. We are exploring new tactics and partnerships to reach our audience segments, develop content, and engage communities in a more thoughtful way.
The people (and our authors!) are what I enjoy the most about working at Macmillan. We are a passionate group of people who share a love for books, art, food, music, culture, and storytelling. It's inspiring to see how our teams bring their various interests and apply it to the work.
The atmosphere at Macmillan is very collaborative and values creativity and innovation. There is also a strong sense of teamwork and pride across departments to deliver the best results to support our authors and the business.
Working in publishing allows me to be a part of the process of bringing new ideas, voices, and perspectives to the world — and is a responsibility that I don't take lightly. Accurate and positive representation in storytelling is very important to me, so if I can contribute to a conversation that inspires an idea for someone who hasn't seen themselves previously represented, then I've made a meaningful impact. It's also a gratifying experience to watch a manuscript turn into a finished book. The industry is constantly evolving, and there's always something new to learn and explore.
